FYI: The Scoville scale measures the hotness chili peppers, as defined by the amount of capsaicin it contatins. Capsaicin is a chemical compaound which stimulates chemoreceptor nerve endings in the skin, especially the mucous membranes. The number of Scoville heat units (SHU) indicates the amount of capsaicin present. As comparisons let's look at some common peppers. The common green pepper has a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) of 0. The Anaheim pepper has a SHU of between 500 and 2,500. The Jalapeno has a (SHU) of between 2,500 and 8,000. The Tabasco and Cayenne have the same (SHU) of between 30,000 and 50,000. The hotest pepper know to man is the Naga Jolokia and has a (SHU) of between 800,000 and 1,041,000. So our pepper spray of 2,000,000 (SHU) carries a punch. Oh just so you know. Pure Capsaicin has a (SHU) of between 15,000,000 and 16,000,000. That's why we don't use pure Capsaicin in the spray. |
